Why Choose a Heat Pump Hot Water System?

Heat pump hot water systems are becoming a popular choice for households looking to reduce the amount of electricity used to heat their water.

Rather than generating heat directly like a conventional electric hot water system, a heat pump draws heat from the surrounding air and transfers it to the water stored in the tank.

Some of the benefits of a heat pump hot water system include:

• Energy-efficient hot water heating

• Lower electricity consumption compared with conventional electric storage systems

• A practical replacement option for many older electric hot water systems

• Reduced reliance on gas when moving towards an all-electric home

• Can work well alongside a home solar power system

• A range of system sizes available to suit different households

The right system will depend on your household’s hot water requirements, the location of the unit and your existing plumbing and electrical setup. Andrew Evans Plumbing can assess these factors and help determine whether a heat pump hot water system is suitable for your property.

Replacing Your Existing Hot Water System with a Heat Pump

If your existing hot water system is getting older, becoming unreliable or needs replacing, it may be a good time to consider upgrading to a heat pump hot water system.

Heat pumps can be used to replace many traditional electric storage hot water systems and may also be an option for households looking to move away from gas hot water.

Before recommending a replacement, Andrew Evans Plumbing can assess your existing system, household hot water requirements and the proposed location for the new unit. We can then advise on suitable heat pump options and what is involved in changing over from your current hot water system.

Planning the replacement before your existing system fails can also give you more time to consider the most suitable option rather than having to make a rushed decision when you suddenly have no hot water.

Heat Pump Hot Water FAQs

How does a heat pump hot water system work?

A heat pump hot water system extracts heat from the surrounding air and transfers that heat to the water stored in the tank. Because it uses heat already available in the air rather than relying entirely on direct electrical heating, it can use considerably less electricity than a conventional electric storage hot water system.

Can a heat pump replace my existing electric hot water system?

In many homes, a heat pump can be used to replace an existing electric hot water system. The suitability will depend on factors including the existing installation, available space, household hot water requirements and the location of the new unit. Andrew Evans Plumbing can assess your current setup before recommending a replacement.

Can I replace gas hot water with a heat pump?

A heat pump may be an option for households wanting to move from gas to electric hot water. Changing from gas can involve additional installation considerations, so it is important to have the existing system and property assessed before choosing a replacement.

Can heat pump hot water work with solar panels?

Yes. A heat pump hot water system can work particularly well in a home with solar power. Depending on the system and household setup, the heat pump can be scheduled to operate during periods when the solar system is generating electricity.

Where should a heat pump hot water system be installed?

Heat pumps need suitable airflow around the unit, and positioning can affect performance and noise considerations. The available space, existing plumbing and proximity to neighbouring properties may all need to be considered. Andrew Evans Plumbing can advise on an appropriate location as part of the installation process.
